Blogging? Really?

Starting a business is hard.  No great revelation there.  I haven’t  been a part of a business start-up in almost 20 years and all I can say is, “Wow, things have changed!”  Funny how the big things kind of take care of themselves – maybe because they’re so obvious.  It’s the little things that’ll make you pull your hair out.

See there’s this new fangled thing called ‘Social Networking’.  Seems that if you’re in business for yourself, you absolutely cannot succeed without doing it…social networking, that is.  At least that’s what all the other people who are ‘doing it’ will tell you. And some of them charge you money to tell you.  Now there’s a money-making idea.  Need to write that one down for future reference.

Anywhooo…I’ve known about Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and MySpace for a long time. I’ve had a Facebook for a couple of years now and actually caved into the Twitter pressure a few months ago. But those were for my personal life. I like to think I’m somewhat of a techno geek, because I know how to make my tweets automatically update my Facebook status!  I know, I can be a bit delusional sometimes. But how great is it to re-connect with old high school classmates, some that I haven’t seen in almost… gulp… 30 years!  Well, maybe not my prom date from 1979, but other than that…

I actually think it’s a great idea to promote your business on these social networking sites. For the most part they’re free, and free is always a good thing. It’s amazing how quickly you get followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook. Reminds me of that old shampoo commercial, “…and they’ll tell two friends, and they’ll tell two friends, and so on and so on…” The idea is to get as many friends/followers as possible so maybe they’ll help promote your product.  I get that. It’s the 21st century version of taking out an ad in a newspaper or magazine.

That brings me to this blog.

All the so-called experts tell me that in addition to ‘tweeting’, ‘facebooking’, and ‘linkingin,’ I need to blog on a regular basis.  Maybe some of my friends/followers will link to the  blog and in turn, link to my website, www.WriteMyWalls.com.  And links are what it’s all about, they tell me. It’s all about driving traffic to the website, www.WriteMyWalls.com, by the way. The problem I have is how do I write a blog frequently and keep it interesting and fun while promoting my website? Did I mention that the address is  www.WriteMyWalls? OK, good. I thought so.

So I’ve decided to take a bit of a different approach. Yes, certainly I’ll promote www. WriteMywalls.com and the great products we sell. In a nutshell, WriteMyWalls.com offers beautiful vinyl lettering and art for the walls and surfaces of your home, school or office. We’ve got hundreds of stock quotes to choose from, or you can make up your own. We’ve also got these great themed packages for kids’ rooms. We’ve put together wording and art in a complete package for the cowboy, football or baseball player, dancer or gymnast in your house. We’ve also got custom monograms and so much more. The great thing is, if you don’t see what you’re looking for on our website, just email me at info@writemywalls.com, and I’ll be happy to design something for you.  In fact, I’ll probably be the one to get your email, and I’ll certainly be the one to do the designing.  Oh, and before I forget, through the end of February, if you go to www.WriteMyWalls.com and buy a gift certificate, we’ll send you the word “Welcome” in this really cool script font in metallic gold vinyl. (It’s great for an entry way to your home.)

In addition to promoting www.WriteMyWalls.com, you’ll also see me commenting on whatever I find interesting in the world.  Whether it’s home decorating in general or some really good (or really bad) movie I just saw or my guilty pleasure, reality TV.  By the way, did you see The Bachelor last night? Why oh why is he keeping Vienna around? Sigh…

So there you have it. My very first blog post. And I’m still asking the questions, “Blogging? Really?”
